PGT Door Installation: The West Palm Beach Owner’s Guide

PGT door installation in West Palm Beach typically runs $850 to $2,400 installed, depending on whether we’re hanging a new slab, rebuilding the frame, or doing a full tear-out with impact glass. We stock PGT-compatible hardware, rollers, hinges, and weatherseal on our trucks, so most door jobs are finished in a single visit. Most homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a door that scraped for six months finally refuses to latch, or an afternoon thunderstorm pushes water under the sill and into the hallway.

What separates a PGT door from a generic one is the engineering around the seal. PGT builds their doors for hurricane country. The jambs are heavier. The interlocking meeting rails, on slated and French door styles, are milled to tighter tolerances. When something fails, it’s almost always a wear part … a roller, a hinge, a weatherstrip … not the slab itself. Replacing the slab without checking why it failed is how you buy the same problem twice.

We’re a local West Palm Beach shop, not a franchise. Dale Kessler has been measuring, setting, and sealing doors across Palm Beach County for the better part of two decades, and we treat a PGT door the way PGT built it: as a system, not a panel. If it is not square, plumb, and sealed, it is not done.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT has made a lot of door lines over the years, and the hardware is not always interchangeable. The three series we see most in West Palm Beach are WinGuard, PremierVue, and the older SpectraGuard line. WinGuard is the impact-rated workhorse, PremierVue is the energy-efficiency line with a slimmer profile, and SpectraGuard predates current parts numbering. If you tell us the door is from before 2010, we’ll come look before we quote.

The only reliable way to identify your exact model is the sticker. PGT etches or labels every unit, usually on the interior face of the jamb or the top edge of the door panel, with a series code and sometimes a manufacturing date. Take a photo of it before you call. If the sticker is gone or faded, we can still identify the door by measuring the slab thickness, the hardware setback, and the roller or hinge configuration.

One PGT-specific gotcha: WinGuard doors use a proprietary interlocking astragal on French and sidelight units. Generic astragals from the parts counter do not seal the same way, and an out-of-spec astragal on an impact-rated door voids the wind-load certification. We order true PGT hardware for anything structural. For non-structural parts like rollers and sweeps, we carry quality aftermarket equivalents that match or exceed OEM spec … and we’re upfront about which one you’re getting and why.

Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing

  • The door drags or binds in summer heat. West Palm Beach humidity swells wood frames and shifts concrete slabs. A door that scraped in July but swings fine in January is telling you the opening is moving, and the hinges or rollers are carrying load they were never designed for.
  • Drafts or daylight around the perimeter. PGT’s weatherseal system compresses when the door latches. Once the seal takes a set and stops rebounding, you’re losing conditioned air and inviting moisture into the jamb. On an impact door, a worn seal also means the door is no longer performing to its wind-load rating.
  • Water or mildew stains at the baseboard inside. This is the one that does the most hidden damage in West Palm Beach. The sill pan or the door sweep fails first, water wicks into the framing, and by the time you see a stain on the drywall, the bottom of the jamb is usually soft.
  • The door won’t latch without lifting or shouldering it. That’s a hinge or roller problem, not a lock problem. Forcing it buys you a few more weeks and makes the eventual repair more expensive.
  • Whistling or rattling during storms. PGT impact doors are designed to handle wind pressure. If yours is noisy in a storm, the panels have moved in relation to the frame, which means the hardware or the seal has failed, and the door is no longer doing the job it was built to do.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what PGT door installation runs in West Palm Beach, including labor:

  • Hardware replacement (rollers, hinges, handles, sweeps): $150 to $425, depending on the part and how many panels are involved.
  • Weatherseal and threshold rebuild: $300 to $700, which includes pulling the door, replacing the sill pan if needed, and re-setting the panel.
  • New slab in an existing PGT frame: $850 to $1,400, depending on the series and whether it’s impact-rated.
  • Full tear-out with new PGT door and frame: $1,800 to $2,400 and up, driven by opening size, siding or stucco work, and finish trim.

DIY or Call Us?

A sliding PGT door panel weighs anywhere from 120 to 250 pounds depending on the series and glass package. That’s the honest starting point for this conversation. You can safely inspect weatherseal, check for loose hardware, and clean the track. But pulling a 200-pound impact panel to get at a roller or adjust a hinge is where do-it-yourself goes wrong quickly. We’ve replaced doors in West Palm Beach where the homeowner tried to save a few hundred dollars, and the panel ended up on the patio with a cracked corner. That repair cost more than the original fix would have.

If the issue is a hardware adjustment, a seal, or a roller, call us at (561) 264-1279. We’ll give you a straight diagnosis over the phone, and if it’s a job for a technician, we’ll quote the labor before we schedule the truck. No surprise line items when the bill comes.
